1838. Inventor Samuel Morse gives his first public demonstration of the telegraph, dots-dashes in all, in Morristown, New Jersey.

1942. Pan AM’s Pacific Clipper arrives in New York, becoming the first commercial airplane to complete around-the-world flight.

1994. An attacker clubs figure skater Nancy Kerrigan on her right leg, among the men later sentenced to prison, the ex-husband of Kerrigan’s rival Tonya Harding.

And 1993. The world loses two artistic greats. Jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, dies at age 75. And ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev, dies at age 54.
