The Other said something in a language that Will did not know; his voice was like the cracking of ice on a winter lake, and the words were mocking.
異鬼開(kāi)口用一種威爾聽(tīng)不懂的語(yǔ)言說(shuō)了幾句話(huà)，聲音如冰湖碎裂，腔調(diào)充滿(mǎn)嘲弄。

mocking，原形mock，指取笑，或者模仿別人來(lái)譏笑嘲弄，是比較正式的用詞，和laugh at、make fun of sb.都可指嘲笑。需要注意的是mock是動(dòng)詞，這里用了the words were mocking 是過(guò)去進(jìn)行時(shí)，表示那個(gè)時(shí)刻的動(dòng)作。

Ser Waymar Royce found his fury. “For Robert!” he shouted, and he came up snarling, lifting the frost-covered longsword with both hands and swinging it around in a flat sidearm slash with all his weight behind it. The Other’s parry was almost lazy.
威瑪·羅伊斯爵士找回了勇氣?！皠诓獓?guó)王萬(wàn)歲！”他高聲怒吼，雙手緊緊握住覆滿(mǎn)白霜的長(zhǎng)劍，使盡全身力氣瘋狂揮舞。異鬼泰然自若。

snarling，是指呲牙咧嘴低聲咆哮。這里對(duì)Waymar咬牙怒吼的形象進(jìn)行了細(xì)致地描繪。

The Other’s parry was almost lazy.一個(gè)almost相當(dāng)?shù)膫魃竦乇磉_(dá)了異鬼簡(jiǎn)直懶得抵擋。

When the blades touched, the steel shattered.
兩劍相擊，鋼劍應(yīng)聲碎裂。

shattered，原形shatter, 指突然破碎成幾段或者碎片。911事件，The explosion shattered World Trade Center.

?也可指希望或信念破滅。Their hopes and dreams were shattered by war.

珍愛(ài)和平

A scream echoed through the forest night, and the longsword shivered into a hundred brittle pieces, the shards scattering like a rain of needles. Royce went to his knees, shrieking, and covered his eyes. Blood welled between his fingers.
尖叫聲回蕩在深夜的林里，羅伊斯的長(zhǎng)劍裂成千千碎片，如同一陣針雨四散甩落。羅伊斯慘叫著跪下，伸手捂住雙眼，鮮血從他指縫間汩汩流下。

brittle,?指堅(jiān)硬而又脆弱。看起來(lái)好像很矛盾，但是想象一下干脆的樹(shù)枝，陶瓷，和骨質(zhì)酥松……

scattering，原形scatter，撒落。

比如做菜電視節(jié)目主持人說(shuō)，把洋蔥撒在魚(yú)的面上。Scatter the onions over the fish.

也可以指把集合在一起的物品給驅(qū)散開(kāi)。美國(guó)是一個(gè)可以持有槍支的國(guó)家，所以那里的人們也有可能遇到這樣的狀況：The sound of gunfire made the crowd scatter in all directions.聽(tīng)到槍聲，人群四散奔逃。

文中的scattering用分詞形式，是獨(dú)立主格的用法。

went to his knees，go/ sink/ fall/ drop to sb’s knees,都是跪下的意思。

shrieking，原形shriek，是驚聲尖叫的意思，和scream的含義相同。原文中shrieking是動(dòng)詞的現(xiàn)在分詞，表動(dòng)作伴隨狀態(tài)。

還記得一個(gè)綠色怪物的動(dòng)畫(huà)系列電影么？那個(gè)和這個(gè)單詞正好差了一個(gè)字母，,要注意兩者的發(fā)音——元音完全不同。shriek 的ie發(fā)長(zhǎng)音[i]{標(biāo)注, 美式KK音標(biāo)}，而Shrek的e發(fā)的是[?]。
