[/en]I have often thought of formulas by which the mechanism of human progress and historical change can be expressed. They seem to be as follows:

Reality - Dreams = Animal Being
Reality + Dreams = A Heart-ache (usually called Idealism)
Reality + Humour = Realism (also called Conservatism)
Dreams - Humour = Fanaticism
Dreams + Humour = Fantasy
Reality + Dreams + Humour = Wisdom[/en]

[/cn]我時常想到一些機構(gòu)公式，想把人類進步和歷史變遷明確地表示出來。這些公式仿佛如下：

“現(xiàn)實”減“夢想”等于“禽獸”
“現(xiàn)實”加“夢想”等于“心痛”（普通叫做“理想主義”）
“現(xiàn)實”加“幽默”等于“現(xiàn)實主義”（普通叫做“保守主義”）
“夢想”減“幽默”等于“熱狂”
“夢想”加“幽默”等于“幻想”
“現(xiàn)實”加“夢想”加“幽默”等于“智慧”[/cn]

先生寫出了自己對各國人民的認(rèn)識：

現(xiàn)三 夢二 幽二 敏一 等于英國人
現(xiàn)二 夢三 幽三 敏三 等于法國人
現(xiàn)三 夢三 幽二 敏二 等于美國人
現(xiàn)三 夢四 幽一 敏二 等于德國人
現(xiàn)二 夢四 幽一 敏一 等于俄國人

在一列國家里，中國最為現(xiàn)實也最缺夢想，沒有之一，不知各位認(rèn)同否？

[/en]How can I tell whether the English ever feel anything— joy, happiness, anger, satisfaction— when they are determined to look so glum on all occasions?[/en]
英國人隨時隨地要露著那種憂郁的樣子，我怎能知道他們究竟有什么感覺呢——歡笑？快樂？憤怒？滿足？


[/en]we have R4 standing for intense realism, which means an attitude of accepting life as it is and of regarding a bird in the hand as better than two in the bush.[/en]
我們用“現(xiàn)四”來代表濃厚的現(xiàn)實主義，這種濃厚的現(xiàn)實主義就是指一種安于人生現(xiàn)狀的態(tài)度，是一種認(rèn)為“二鳥在林，不如一鳥在手”的態(tài)度。


[/en]The mature Chinese is always a person who refuses to think too hard or to believe in any single idea or faith or school of philosophy whole-heartedly.[/en]
中國人對任何一個哲學(xué)觀念、信仰、派別，都不愿專心地相信，或過分起勁地去研究。

1. 搬家—— change one's residence/ move house
2. 憂郁——glum; melancholy; gloom; heavyhearted; dejected…多么流行的心情詞，記得多樣化表達咯
例：? 1.? 他的性格中有少許憂郁的氣質(zhì)。
???????????? There is a vein of melancholy in his character.
??????? 2.? 戰(zhàn)敗的消息給小城蒙上了一層憂郁。
???????????? The news of defeat cast a gloom over the town.
