One of China's biggest social networking websites has made its stock market debut on the New York Stock Exchange for more than 700 million dollars. Renren has about 30 million regular users in China. Renren was set up by three classmates at a Chinese university in 2005. Its site resembles Facebook, and its origins are also similar. But is it really worth 5 billion dollars? The opening price was set higher than seemed likely a few days ago, and the shares shot up nearly 40% from that level in the first hour of trading. This despite the fact that Renren was forced to backtrack on claims that it has over 100 million subscribers. Thousands of demonstrators marched in silence toward Mexico City's central square Sunday, carrying banners and signs that demanded an end to the country's drug war. Well-known Mexican poet Javier Sicilia led protesters on their 80-kilometer journey, which began Thursday in the central city of Cuernavaca. Speaking before a sea of demonstrators at the large plaza in the heart of the nation's capital Sunday afternoon, activists read a list of demands that they said were part of a "national pact." They gave government officials a deadline of June 10 to sign on to the deal. Their proposed agreement included "demanding an end to the strategy of war," the removal of corruption from all three levels of government in less than six months, and the quick solving of several notable high-profile cases. Protesters also said that the authority should budget just as much money for education and youth programs as they do for security.
