Toyota faces 'dangerous vehicle' fraud case Prosecutors in California have launched a lawsuit against car firm Toyota, claiming it had engaged in "fraud" by hiding evidence of dangerous vehicle defects.

The District Attorney for Orange County, Tony Rackauckas, said his office along with private attorneys sued the US sales arm of Toyota - charging that the world's top-selling automaker has endangered the public with defective vehicles - and engaged in deceptive business practices.

Mr Rackauckas said: "We'll be alleging in court, on behalf of the people of Orange County, that Toyota knowingly sold cars and trucks with defects that caused Toyotas to accelerate suddenly and uncontrollably.

"These defects exist in hundreds of thousands of Toyotas sold to Californians over the last several years. Toyota has known about these defects but intentionally did not disclose them to California purchasers."

Toyota has recalled more than 8 million vehicles globally to address the risk that accelerator pedals on a range of its vehicles could become stuck because of a loose floor mat or a glitch in the pedal assembly.

Unintended acceleration in the company's Toyota and Lexus vehicles has been linked to at least five US crash deaths since 2007. Authorities are investigating reports alleging 47 other fatalities over the past decade.

在最近一例有關(guān)豐田汽車的事故中，圣地亞哥一位普銳斯車主在駕車過程中遭遇油門踏板卡住的故障。該車主稱，在他駕車行駛的過程中，普銳斯的油門踏板被卡住，甚至當(dāng)他嘗試用手提起踏板時也拉不動。此后，車主撥打了911緊急救助電話，并遵照指示來嘗試停下汽車，但仍舊未能減速。最后，加利福尼亞州高速公路巡警隊派出的一名官員利用公共廣播系統(tǒng)要求車主同時使用緊急剎車和剎車踏板，才使汽車減速到了每小時50英里，并最終得以關(guān)掉點火裝置。據(jù)悉，豐田和美國高速公路交通安全署正在對此事故進行調(diào)查。豐田汽車此前表示，沒有證據(jù)表明，這樁事故是由電子油門控制系統(tǒng)存在缺陷而引起的。

公開資料顯示，豐田目前在全球已召回超過 800萬輛問題汽車，在美國至少面臨89宗車主集體訴訟，賠償金額涉及30億美元。
