The dinner table was once considered the cornerstone of a family home, the place where everyone could get together at least once a day to spend time with each other.
But new research has revealed that UK families are more likely to use the dinner table for arguing, making bombshell announcements and sex than for eating food.
More than 78 per cent of Brits do not sit down at the dinner table to eat every day, with 23 meals eaten on the sofa every month, according to the study.
And 62 per cent don't consider the dining table to be the heart of the home, says the research.
Instead, the average dining table will see 132 arguments, 93 bombshell announcements, 594 homework sessions and even 104 'moments of passion' before it's replaced every 10.18 years on average, according to the study of 2,000 people by Italian food giant Giovanni Rana.
The research says the table will also see 259 tantrums by children, 1,995 food and drink spills and 1,890 hours of work. And when we do use the table for eating, we only spend 10 minutes a day on average tucking into our food, says the study.
The study found that just 0.8 per cent of a UK adult's lifetime will be spent at the dinner table, with 17,660 meals eaten on the sofa instead.
More than 300 people will fall asleep at the table during its lifespan, while the average Brit will spend 4,864 hours sitting down at the table during their lifetime.
