英美“u”之分歧怎么來的

In the early 18th century, English spelling was not standardized. Differences became noticeable after the publishing of influential dictionaries.
18世紀(jì)早期，英語的拼寫方式?jīng)]有統(tǒng)一的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)。拼寫方面的差異變得明顯是在兩本極有影響力的字典出版之后。

Today's British English spellings mostly follow Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language 1755, while many American English spellings follow Webster's An American Dictionary of the English Language.
今天英式英語的拼寫方法大多是沿用1755年約翰遜編纂的《英語詞典》，美式英語的拼寫則沿用了韋伯斯特編寫的《美國英語詞典》。

Webster's 1828 dictionary had only -or and is given much of the credit for the adoption of this form in the United States.
1828年的《美國英語詞典》用的都是-or結(jié)尾的拼寫，美國人民會采用這種拼法，多半歸功于這本詞典。

By contrast, Johnson's 1755 dictionary used -our for all words still so spelled in Britain.
相比之下，1755年的《英語詞典》中，那些用-our來結(jié)尾的單詞，則被英國人一直沿用至今。

下面來總結(jié)一下英美拼寫的差異：

? 英式英語中單詞結(jié)尾是-re的，美語中通常寫作-er。

?英式英語中單詞結(jié)尾是-our的，美語中通常寫作-or。

注：在-our的讀音是[a??]的情況下，英美的拼寫都是相同的，比如hour，flour。

?英式英語中動詞結(jié)尾是-ize/-ise的，美語中都拼成-ize。

?英式英語中單詞結(jié)尾是-yse的，美語中都拼成-yze。

?英式英語中，動詞以“元音+l”結(jié)尾的，在動詞變形時，要雙寫l。在美式英語中，l不雙寫。

?英式英語中，雙元音拼寫的ae或oe，在美式英語中只留一個e。

注：在美式英語中，有些術(shù)語，如archaeology（考古學(xué)）仍然保留了ae的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)拼法，但archeology也是可以接受的。

? 英式英語中，某些名詞結(jié)尾是-ence的，在美語中拼為-ense。

? 英式英語中，某些名詞結(jié)尾是-ogue的，在美語中拼為-og或-ogue。

總地來說，英式英語傾向于保留各種外來語融入英語時的原本拼寫，而美式英語則會讓單詞的拼寫和發(fā)音一致。

答案：美式拼寫。Program，項目，在英式英語里寫作programme。

6. That old pizza in the fridge has mould on it!

答案：英式拼寫。mould 霉，美式英語寫作mold。

7. That jewelry store in the mall was just robbed.

答案：美式拼寫。Jewelry ，珠寶，在英式英語里寫作jewellery 。

8. ?I can't find my pajamas.

答案：美式拼寫。Pajamas，睡衣，在英式英語里寫作pyjamas 。

9. Do you think a grief counselor could help them?

答案：美式拼寫。counselor 顧問，英式英語寫作 counsellor。

10. Her speciality is criminal law.

答案：英式拼寫。speciality，專長，美式英語寫作specialty。
