Though it's been almost three decades since Star Wars purists agreed that the franchise was on course, it's still going to cause consternation to them to hear that Disney will be taking over the saga.

The legendarily saccharine dream factory will helm the franchise from from 2015's Episode 7 after buying creator George Lucas out to the tune of $4.05 billion.

The Walt Disney Co. announced the agreement to make the purchase in cash and stock on Tuesday.Disney confirmed that Star Wars Episode 7 is scheduled for release in 2015.The deal brings Lucasfilm under the Disney banner with other brands including Pixar, Marvel, ESPN and ABC.

Lucas will be creative consultant on new Star Wars films.Lucas said in a statement: 'It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers.'Star Wars Episode 7 was instantly trending on Twitter, with many fans expressing disbelief and concern.

There were those that envisioned Princess Leia joined the army of Disney princesses on the merchandising shelves.

Many echoed the view of Mike Drucker, who pledged: 'I will vote for whichever candidate stops Star Wars: Episode 7 from happening.

Though it has to be noted that Star Wars fans are a hard bunch to please, they haven't been happy with Lucas since 1999's The Phantom Menace which rebooted the series after the original trilogy ended in 1983 with Return of the Jedi.
