China's new terminal
Beijing unveiled a new jumbo terminal, to be finished in time for the 2008 Olympics. CNN's Jaime FlorCruz got a preview.

At a cost of 2.8 billion US dollars, Beijing International Airport is getting a new terminal and it's a super jumbo. It covers an area of about 170 football fields making it one of the biggest in the world.

The massive structure, designed by British architect Norman Foster, will be eco-friendly. The terminal building makes full use of natural light through sky windows and ground-to-ceiling glass facades. That will be a welcome upgrade from Beijing's current airport, better known for its congestion and flight delays. It handled more than 48 million passengers lat year, way above its intended capacity of 35 million. Such a rapid growth of the aviation industry, officials warn it's too much for the industry to handle, and may lead to high risks in flight safety.

Traffic in and out of the Beijing Airport has been cut by 48 flights a day since last month.

There will be a new runway, and the new Terminal 3 will be equipped with state-of-the-art systems designed to speed up ticketing, baggage handling, and passenger flow. A rail system will take travelers direct to the heart of Beijing.

Chinese engineers say the new terminal will be world-class, but with recognizably Chinese features.

One dramatic way to show that: the terminal sloping roof looks like the back of the dragon, China's traditional symbol of power.
