This Day in History – June 4th
On June 4th, 1940, Dunkirk is evacuated.
British and French troops were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk in France after the sudden surrender by Belgium's King Leopold II, allowed Nazi [-----1-----] to break the Allied front in late May of 1940. A massive [-----2-----] was [-----3-----] in which more than 338,000 were saved from death or capture. Virtually every ship available was pressed into service, [-----4-----]. On June 4th, 1940, the withdrawal to England was complete. Rescued soldiers later formed the heart of a greater army [-----5-----] to return to the European mainland.
