The German teenager who advertised her 16th birthday party on Facebook only for 1600 gatecrashers to turn up at her house, has told a German newspaper how "terrible" she feels.

The girl, named only as Thessa, accidentally posted the invite to millions of people on the social networking site leading to hundreds of revellers descending upon her home in Hamburg. When the teenager realised her mistake she immediately cancelled the event but word was already spreading around the internet.

Over 100 police officers, some on horses, were called to the scene to control the crowd, with 11 people arrested. Thessa and her family were not at home when the partygoers arrived.

She said: "I'm so terribly sorry, I didn't want this to happen at all. When I was sitting with my Grandmother on the sofa and heard what was going on I was totally shocked. A friend said that bottles were being thrown and fences being broken down. I felt terrible."

The teenager, who has now abandoned Facebook told the German tabloid that she enjoyed a much quieter birthday celebration than the party that was held in her honour.

"I hardly dare to go outside because I feel so ashamed and worried and when I go to school the other students laugh at me and I'm the butt of their jokes," she added.
