Output = out-（向外）+ -put（放置），即往外放，引申詞義“輸出、產(chǎn)出、產(chǎn)量”。

Output表“產(chǎn)量”時，同近義詞有yield，production。yield指生產(chǎn)物，農(nóng)作物的總產(chǎn)量；

production含義廣泛，不同場合有不同的意思，可表示“產(chǎn)品，產(chǎn)物”，尤指人類智力或藝術勞動的產(chǎn)品；output是人、機器、機構等的產(chǎn)量，比如value of industrial output工業(yè)產(chǎn)值、annual output年產(chǎn)量、total output總產(chǎn)量、daily output日產(chǎn)量、economic output經(jīng)濟產(chǎn)量。

企業(yè)成本管理中有這樣一個概念：產(chǎn)量法（Output Method），也稱產(chǎn)量成本法，是根據(jù)企業(yè)成本的歷史資料，利用成本與產(chǎn)量之間的依存關系來測算產(chǎn)品成本的方法。產(chǎn)品成本（product costs）分成固定成本（fixed cost）和變動成本（variable cost）兩部分。
