Speculator = specul-（來自拉丁語specere，看）+ -ator（名詞詞尾，人），即觀察的人，思索的人，引申為“投機者、思索者”。買低賣高的尋利行為就是投機（speculation）。

商業(yè)領(lǐng)域里，常見的speculator有property speculator房地產(chǎn)投機商、real estate speculator炒房者、exchange speculator外匯投機者、international speculator國際投機商。

投機者（Speculator）是指在金融市場上通過“買空賣空”（fictitious transaction）、“賣空買空”，希望以較小的資金來博取利潤的投資者。國際投機商（international speculators）一般是針對國際市場（international market），特別是外匯市場（foreign exchange market）。投機者要承擔(dān)投機的變動風(fēng)險。
