字里行間

from scratch 從最基礎(chǔ)的開始做起。scratch 一詞作動詞的意思是“抓、搔”。作名詞用就是“抓痕”。這里引用跑步運(yùn)動員躬身待發(fā)時，雙手抓地的情形，來作“從頭開始”的意思。

弦外之音

這種“從頭開始，從零開始”的說法，英語中還有很多，而且各有其不同的來源。

from the ground up 有高樓“拔地而起”的含義，也是指“從基礎(chǔ)開始”。
from ground zero 原指“炸彈的落地爆炸點(diǎn)”，但也可以用來指 starting point, most basic level，也即“起點(diǎn)、最初”。
back to the drawing board 有建筑師“又回到繪圖板上了”的含義，指的是“又得從頭開始”。
back to square one 有孩童跳方塊游戲中的那“第一塊”的含義，指的也是“起跑線、從頭開始”的意思。請看下列不同的例句:

活學(xué)活用

1. We have to learn the new system from the ground up.
這對我們來說是個嶄新的體系，得從頭學(xué)起。

2. Ten years ago, there was no such a process to talk about. We really had to start from scratch.
十年前，根本就不存在這樣的程序。我們是從頭開始做起的。

3. The last round of negotiations failed again, and we're now back to square one.
最后的那輪談判又失敗了?，F(xiàn)在我們又回到了原點(diǎn)。
