字里行間

a few 一些，有些。其含義是肯定的。quite a few 就是“相當(dāng)?shù)囊恍币簿褪恰昂芏唷钡囊馑肌?/p>

table會議桌。on the table是指“開會時，放在桌上的議題”，有待討論的意思。

弦外之音

table 在這個意思上，也可以用作動詞，意在“提議”就等于說，建議把某個問題放在會議桌上，讓大家討論。比如下面的這段對話：

A: I'd like to table the issue. 我正式提議這個問題。
B: I'll second it. 我支持他的提議。
C: Me, too. 我也同意。

可是，這個“提出現(xiàn)在討論”的用法只是“英國英語”中的習(xí)慣。在美國，table 則是“提出現(xiàn)在不討論”的意思。請看：
I reckon it's an important issue, but still, let's table it till next staff meeting. 我承認(rèn)這是個大問題，但還是讓我們推到下一次小組會議時再討論吧。

活學(xué)活用

1. I'm not aware of this issue at all. It's never been on the table.
這個問題，我一點兒都不了解，從來沒有放在桌面上討論過。

2. What's the agenda tonight? Does anybody know what's on the table for discussions?
今晚的會議內(nèi)容是什么？誰知道要討論什么嗎？
