The United States calls its national day “Independence Day” or “The 4th of July”, marking its independence from Great Britain during the American Revolution in 1776. The history of Independence Day in the US might surprise you. Americans celebrate on the 4th of July, but America was actually declared independent by Congress on July 2nd. The official document was indeed written on the 4th, and Americans first celebrated their Independence on the 8th!

Traditionally, the 4th of July includes things like firework displays, baseball games, community and family gatherings, vacations, brass band concerts, parades, patriotic songs and lots of grilled food.

A fun fact: In 1916, a hot-dog eating contest started on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York City, as a way to test how patriotic new immigrants were!
