Journey to the West might be the most influential one among the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, and the most well-known one overseas. This novel depicts the suffering journey of the famous monk Xuanzang together with his three disciples, as they traveled through the western regions of China to India to bring back Buddhist scripture. Though the theme of the story is based on Buddhism, the novel borrows a large amount of materials from Chinese folk tales and myths, creating various vivid characters, the most well-known among which is Sun Wukong, whose fights against various monsters are familiar to virtually every Chinese kid.
