交通是運輸和郵電的總稱。運輸是人和物借助交通工具的載運，產生有目的的空間位移，郵電則是郵政和電信的總稱。

改革以來，我國的鐵路、公路、水運和民航等運輸方式均得到較快的發(fā)展，而且隨著交通運輸事業(yè)市場化程度的不斷提高，各種運輸方式之間的市場競爭也已全面展開。但是，由于多年來運輸市場分屬不同部門管理，缺乏統(tǒng)一的總體規(guī)劃和政策指導，各種運輸方式發(fā)展很不平衡：公路高速發(fā)展，近幾年年投入2000多億元，高速公路已達3萬多公里，位居世界第二；鐵路、水運相對發(fā)展緩慢，鐵路客運量十多年來一直徘徊不前，運輸份額持續(xù)下降，公路運輸承擔了大量的長距離大宗散貨運輸；銜接不同運輸方式的綜合運輸樞紐建設嚴重滯后，鐵路、公路和水運在同類客貨源上盲目競爭的現(xiàn)象較為普遍。
