Sun Yang’s success in London Olympic Games is based on his persistence and effort. He not only fought for the glory for the motherland, but also showed good sportsmanship.
The road to glory
At the London Olympic Games, Sun Yang smashed his own world record in the Men’s 1500m Freestyle to win a gold medal in the event. Before that victory, the young champion won another gold in the Men’s 400m Freestyle. At the age of 21, he became the first Chinese man to win two Olympic swimming titles!
Sun was born into a sporting family in Zhejiang province. His parents were once volleyball players. In 1998, when he was seven years old, a swimming coach took Sun, the tallest boy in kindergarten, to her summer swimming training class.
Straight away, it was obvious that Sun was a gifted swimmer. After four years of training, he was chosen to join the swimming team of Zhejiang province.
With the intention of becoming a long distance swimmer, Sun had to endure harsher training regimes than his fellow short distance team mates. And when feeling bored and tired in training, “I told myself I shouldn’t give up halfway,” Sun says.
The young swimming talent came into the spotlight in 2010 when he won two gold medals at the 16th Asian Games. He dominated the men’s 800m and 1500m freestyle at the World Championships (游泳世錦賽) in 2011.
With the glory and fame gained in recent years, especially after the Olympic victory, Sun has found himself being chased by fans and media alike, though he says he will learn how to cope with the pressure.
“What I need to do now is to turn pressure into motivation,” Sun says. He is determined to bring more gold medals to his home country.
